Appearance

Height: 5'11.5 on land; 9'10 including tailWeight: 162lb; 680lbHair Colour: White (varies with glamour)Eye Color: Light blue, streaked with grey (varies with glamour)Complexion: Fair, unblemishedGeneral Health: Physically speaking, Fors' in her prime. They're breaking former swimming records, their illusionary glamour stays on for almost a full day, and the handle of a sword no longer feels foreign within their grasp. Fors has never felt stronger. The occasional bout of loneliness does still strike them, but the journey along vast open water is sure to be a fitting distraction. It has to be.Piercings: None intentionally, but their left ear fin has a notch taken out by a fishing hook. In her human form, she repurposes that hole into a helix, often wearing a gold cuff in it.Tattoos: None.Build: Ecto-Mesomorph. A tall, slender frame; androgynous. Resting beneath loose-fitting textiles are broad shoulders and defined limbs, as well as slim-toned abs (think 11-line abs).Scars: A couple of faded nicks spread out miscellaneously (knuckles, arms, navel, fin, etc).Dominant Hand: Ambidextrous, but prefers her left.Distinguishing Features: White lashes frame ghastly hues that resemble the looking glass, contrasting the single brown mole that dots the apple of their cheek below her left eye. Fors prefers to leave their nails long — stiletto-shaped claws are better suited for hunting. As a product of the constant application of glamor, her features seem to be ever-changing; there’s always something a little off each time you see them. The only time you’d be able to catch a glimpse of their unadulterated face would be if they dispel the illusion intentionally or not, or when they’re asleep. In their merfolk form, they sprout an impressive tail (white in colour, but opalescent in the light), her fingers are webbed, and iridescent lamina climbs the sides of her body; patches of shimmering scales appear on forearms and biceps, sporadically wrapping around the width of their chest and scattered along their navel (for this reason, Fors forgoes any sort of top in this form).

Connections

Family:

↳ Mother: Adrienne Casper (dark; adriatic sea + treasure bearer) [deceased]
↳ Father: Vahl Lykke (fair + happiness) [deceased]

Friends: Many, too many to list. She makes fast friends with those at the fae settlements she visits; amiable but not overbearing, they're quite social despite the unapproachable air about them.

Likes & Dislikes

General Likings: Travelling (what kind of fae doesn’t like new adventures?), fresh fruit, the rush of adrenaline that comes with the thrill of the hunt/buzz of the race, handmade jewellery, star-gazing, and collecting miscellaneous trinkets.General Dislikings: Lobster (they’ve eaten far too many of them!), dry skin, enclosed spaces, pollen (and by association, springtime — they may be allergic), and tail cramps.Favourite..

↳ Food(s) / Drink(s): Sea urchin and sparkling water
↳ Book(s) / Movie(s): Brave new world and Howl’s moving castle
↳ Color(s): Dark grey, sea glass green
↳ Music / Band(s): Classical/instrumental, or anything with a strong baseline

Skills

Powers:

↳ Illusion magic, enhanced speed and endurance in the water, Kiss of the Sea, telepathy amongst merfolk and sea creatures

Kiss of the Sea: A temporary blessing imparted to those merfolk kiss that allow the blessed to breathe underwater

.

Other Skills:

↳ Able to identify most aquatic flora and fauna
↳ Able to identify the difference between real and fake pearls, as well as give a quick assessment to its worth
↳ Able to apply glamour like it’s second nature, and to maintain a glamour for up to a day
↳ Able to handle extreme temperatures; mild thermal regulation due to the varying temperatures of the seas
↳ Modest skill in swordplay
↳ Enhanced tracking (passive observance) as a result of living as a hunter
↳ Uncanny ability to always know where the cardinal directions are in relation to their current position

.

Fighting Style(s):

↳ As a mermaid, she prefers to parry when she’s not up to the fight. With a well-timed swish of their tail, they could disorient multiple opponents at once with ease. Fors is a strong swimmer, and is able to get out of tough situations by relying on their ability to manoeuvre beneath the waves.
↳ As a human? Her skills are obviously beginner. The home-court advantage goes out the window whenever they step out of the water, so they picked up a sword with the intention of defending herself against frisky mortals. It’s… rough at best, but she could hold her own against moderately-skilled humans.

.

Preferred Weapons:

↳ Fin and fangs, but they wield a sword or a dagger as a human.

Misc.

Preferred style of clothing / Most worn outfits: Fors prefers simplicity. They sport an androgynous style; frilled or slack blouses tucked into fitted trousers, collared shirts worn beneath knitted sweaters overtop boyfriend jeans, belted dress pants with a loose short sleeve, or when she’s tired, she’ll pull on an oversized sweatshirt and joggers.

Important Accessories: The gold cuff she wears on her left ear was an homage paid to her mother, a trinket made before her passing that they sought out and traded for. Aside from those, she doesn’t own any accessories. Her parents’ possessions were buried with them, and they’ve never placed that much value on objects as a nomadic family.

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Habits:

↳ Her ear fins subconsciously fan out when she’s interested in something, much like how a cat’s ears rotate or how a dog’s ears perk up.
↳ Their skin is always moisturised, as a result of constantly reapplying vaseline or lotion whenever they have a chance to do so.
↳ When bored, they tap out rhythmic renditions of songs stuck in her head or morse code.

.

Secrets:

↳ There’s something satisfying about besting a beast, ripping into tender flesh with nothing but her bare hands and sharpened teeth. To hold the fragile concept of being alive in her palms, just to take it away on a whim. Isn’t it funny?

↳ This feeling, which they have mistaken for the love of the hunt, may be rather concerning..

↳ They have trouble visualising space and scale, and are often unable to read blueprints of ships or buildings. However, they can read nautical maps effortlessly.
↳ Fishnets as an aesthetic clothing choice turn her off so fast. They may never have a bigger deal-breaker than this, honestly.

.

Assorted / Miscellaneous character info:

↳ Fors’ high tolerance for regular alcohol curbs their desire to drink — she can’t get the buzz of feeling drunk, making it rather pointless to tip back a glass after a rough day. They only drink for show in the presence of company, or in social situations.
↳ She could prepare any kind of seafood at record speed, deboning, gutting, and beheading within seconds.
↳ They have self-proclaimed sufficiency in gardening (she collects the seeds of exotic flora to plant haphazardly on passing islands, checking on them every blue moon to see if they’re thriving — usually, they’re dead, but maybe someday.. she’ll develop a green thumb)

.

Equipment:

↳ When travelling, they learned to pack light, only bringing along items that are necessary that could fit in her crossbody knapsack:

↳ Her accessories, miscellaneous wares (pearls, shells, scales, knickknacks found on the way), a jagged steel dagger (in case they get in trouble or caught), and various national currencies in the form of coins.

Background

trigger warning for implied suicide.

Her father, Vahl, a guardian of a few underwater fae settlements in the vast Atlantic. Her mother, Adrienne, an ambassador of sorts between merfolk and humans who poses as a pearl trader. Cue the tragic sinking of the Titanic (and its sister ships) at the onset of luxury human travel across the seas, acting as the catalyst that brought them together. Fors was conceived within the first few years of their relationship, and born on a cold December morning in 1922.The first few decades of her life were spent in the settlement her father protected, aimlessly spending her days gaining sentience and making the first of the many happy memories she could recall. It takes a community to raise a child; Fors was immersed in a loving community made up of all sorts of merfolk who loved her like their own. Being brought up in a welcoming culture of independence and creativity, learning from both her parents about the things that made them happy before they met each other brought them so much joy. They would tag along when their mother went on land, pulling on a lax glamor to mask their unusual white hair and to blend in amongst the mortals. The easy life of idly practising illusion magic and finding pearls allowed Fors to grow up soft-hearted, taking this simple happiness for granted. Then her mother died. Her body returned from a business trip mangled and barely recognizable. Fors, who was freshly 45 years old, was barely allowed the opportunity to grieve before she was given a chisel to start whittling away at the centre of a hunk of coral. As Fae, death is taught to not be the means of an end, but a chance to give back to the universe, and to begin the new adventure of reincarnation. But — they doubted it. What if it doesn’t work? That was the first time they swallowed their thoughts, hands trembling as they repeated the foreign motion of digging a hole in the centre of the Lophelia pertusa to bury her duplicitous notions as well as their beloved mother’s remains. (1967, 45)(Why she never vocalized these thoughts, they never understood. Curiosity was the lifeblood of fae and independence was a necessity, so why was she so hesitant to speak out?)Her mother was one of a kind. The thought of her life being exchanged for the good of the universe made Fors realize that maybe they weren’t as selfless and giving as the rest of the fae; she was selfish by nature, and that didn’t bother them.Almost immediately after the ceremony proceedings, the father-daughter pair set off, leaving the settlement that they had resided in for almost half a century. Fors allowed herself to believe that it was to look for traces of their mother out in the world, as if they were convincing themselves of reincarnation in a last-ditch effort.Vahl imparted all sorts of topics of wisdom onto Fors that weren’t touched upon back at the fae settlement, such as the extent of the turmoil between fae and the rest of the supernaturals, and how to fend for themselves without the protection of (essentially) a coven. He taught her how to hunt for elusive prey, how to lurk in the undertows and to always keep an eye out for the unknown. There was a special focus on the topic of illusion magic and how to use it. Copious amounts of time was spent in order to socialize her with modern humans of the time, passively letting her observe their behaviours to mimic. They travelled for many years, swimming the equivalent of dozens of trips around the world. A nomadic duo, with Fors slowly absorbing her progenitor’s teachings for three decades as they ventured out from the Atlantic Ocean that she was so familiar with. During their travels, Fors was able to reconnect with a partner of her mother’s old business and decided to take over the reins of said trade of Casper Co. (1982, 60)She parted ways with her father at this point, delving into human life and the complex relationship between humans vs. supernatural and supernaturals vs. fae while their father returned to fae settlements to focus on his duties as a guardian. They spent more of their time on land than in the water during this period, fine-tuning their glamor to both cover the sheathed sword perpetually hanging on her hip and to avoid their fragile immortality being found out by prying human eyes, rousing the suspicion of traditional supernaturals. For nine years, Fors was able to use knowledge of their travels to expand the business internationally to include regional specialties such as the conch pearl, baroque pearls, and south sea pearls. (1991, 69)It was easy to lose themselves in the work, finding solace in cementing her mother’s legacy. They lost contact with their father a few years into their solo journey and opted to send messages by burning them with intent rather than just telepathy. (Fors regrets not checking in on their father during this time. Wishful thinking compels her to believe that something might have changed if she was able to convince him to stay with her..)When they finally got a response, it wasn’t the usual check-up note they were expecting. On a piece of paper that materialized in her pocket, written in the scribe of the Elder that led the settlement they grew up in, was a brief note urging her to hurry back. Her father had passed. She was told that stagnation set in, and the mighty Vahl was reduced to a coral burial scheduled soon, so they should hurry back to the north Atlantic ocean to attend the ceremony.[In reality, her dad ended his life willingly to follow their mom, coming back to the same settlement where Adrienne was buried. The Elder was trying to shield them from finding out. Imagine what learning that their parent chose to end their life would do to a youth fae? The plan was that Fors would be told later, when they were better able to handle the situation. However, Fors is sharp. How did their dad, whom they just saw only over a decade ago fall to stagnation? To the withering? A process that takes up to four whole decades? The timeline didn’t add up, but no one would tell her anything. The only thing that allowed her to accept the reality of her situation, was the thought that maybe her mother and father would be reborn to meet each other again in their next life. The very idea that she had doubts about before, she now grasped at desperately, needing to believe in the idea of never-ending reincarnation in order to be at peace with their parents’ deaths.]The entombment proceedings were very similar to their mother’s, ending in her father’s coral coffin being planted next to her mother’s. (1992, 70)So, what now? She did the one thing that came to her naturally: swim.In the following years, they allowed themselves to take a breather, finally relaxing to just explore aimlessly. From the icy Arctic oceans to tropical Dominican coasts, Fors island-hopped for years, picking up various hobbies for the next few decades. Fors was still involved in Casper Co, though her appearances became more sporadic. She had found a worthy mortal to carry on the business (who knows about their identity, to some extent) and visits in glamour occasionally to see how it’s going. They mingled with humans, particularly enjoying the drama of ushering in the modern age (also the fashion of the late 90s and 2000s). There was also the occasional romance, and brief flings with mortals that never led to anything more, allowing Fors to develop an understanding of their attraction to both genders. (2024, 101)Burning messages with intent: To burn a message with intent allows the sender to teleport said message to the intended receiver. However, this is the equivalent of snail mail in the seas.Stagnation: Also known as the Withering. It is essentially death for fae. A process of their body slowly hardening. It usually takes place across a lengthy period of time due to lack of mental stimulation or purpose in life. This leads to coral burials, in which the body of the fae is placed within the husk of a hollowed out coral to allow their life to return to the universe.
